Getting To Know PodWheels

The launch and subsequent development of PodWheels beginning in 2016 can be traced back to the career path taken by Greg Thompson, the Founder and Executive Producer PodWheels.

In 1998, Greg joined the public relations team of a large truckload carrier after more than a decade of working in the media as a producer, reporter and feature writer. Greg’s initial primary responsibility with the truckload carrier was in the area of internal communications – creating content that would highlight and engage the carrier’s driving community that was approximately 90 percent of its employee base. Greg’s role with the truckload carrier expanded into overseeing external communications, media relations as well as marketing and branding. In his time with the truckload carrier, Greg also had the opportunity to work in collaborative roles with many of the leading trucking associations and organizations in the industry.

Having served as a beat writer for a mid-sized metro daily newspaper and a producer of numerous documentary-style radio programs, Greg viewed his internal communications responsibilities with the truckload carrier as an opportunity to spend time with the company drivers and owner-operators in the fleet, talking with them and learning about the trucking industry from the perspective of professional drivers.

Over his 14-year tenure with the truckload carrier, Greg’s almost daily conversations with company drivers and owner-operators provided an invaluable education on the challenges professional drivers face while earning a living in a position that is both a job and a lifestyle. As part of his internal communications work, Greg interviewed hundreds of company drivers and owner-operators for written feature stories, video segments and audio interviews. For most of the participants, the Q&As with Greg stood as the first time that they had ever participated in a media-style interview.

How We Got Started

In 2016, Greg began PodWheels by putting together a network of contract communications professionals who could collaborate in creating a driver engagement platform that utilized podcasting to deliver key messaging to professional drivers through their smartphones. PodWheels launched our services by working with trucking companies because of the key role that driver engagement plays in driver retention as well as safety, effective operations execution, claims prevention, driver wellness, and many other areas.

At PodWheels, we understand that trucking companies experience a great deal of variable cost in all the areas impacted by driver engagement. At the end of the day, the ability to clearly articulate the key messages that can help professional drivers and promote a true sense of community within a carrier could well be the difference between profitability and loss for many truck fleets.

For fleets, the ability to have a platform that can enhance the perspective and understanding in vital areas of your operation should enhance your overall operation and open the doors to increased profitability. For company drivers and owner-operators, the ability to have informational resources that can help in their work and life on the road can be invaluable.

At PodWheels, we are focused on the success of professional drivers and fleets involved in moving the American economy. We are also focused on celebrating the accomplishments of professional drivers.
